Installation Open

Hundreds of visitors to the Winter Garden are listening to the sounds and watching video images of everyday, as they stand on the balcony looking out at the World Trade Center Site.

Tonight

Tonight we perform for the public, which we have been doing less formally throughout our time here. I'm amazed at how focused the performers have become. There's a lot of power in live performance: an event that marks a moment in time and place. 8:30 pm thursday, May 8 2008

Details, Diverse

To build this work, this portrait of a place, we use the frame of details: the 6pm guffaws of May outdoor happy hour recorded next to a dish depository; the single Spanish sentence ringing through the empty Winter Garden at 12 midnight; the constant swing 3 o'clock Starbucks door; the key that shuts down the escalators at midnight; the 100 people sitting at 1pm and the 100 people moving at 5pm; the few people with nowhere to go and the thousands who are going across the Hudson or somewhere else fast.

By bringing light to details, everyday movement image and sound, a viewpoint of a place is built. This viewpoint forms a dialog with peoples' perception of this modern urban office complex, a complex which is both normal and surrounded by the spectacular and monumental.

The School of Fish

A busy public space can be like a school of fish: one follows another and then the whole group turns unexpectedly toward an exit, an entrance, a waiting place...or two people peel off from the group and take their own direction. Lines and circles of movement, ebbing and flowing.

Last week in rehearsal for Giant Place Detail we recreated through interactive movement the flow and flux of a crowd moving through the Winter Garden. One evening, we were turning with and moving through one another and suddenly a woman on a bench jumped up and joined our "school". The video above captures this moment..

Interviews in the Winter Garden

This video was taken a year ago and was part of our research in developing Giant Place Detail. Interviews and ambient recording will be part of the video installation and documentary film and inform the process of making the performance.
